To all the California officials concerned with meeting the needs of the residents of Los Angeles County:
Los Angeles County is home to the highest number of dog owners (1.5 million) in the state, yet only 1/10 of a mile of the county’s 75 miles of beaches is designated as an off-leash dog beach. Considering the multitude of other recreational venues sanctioned by Los Angeles County, it is clear that the needs of dog owners are not being met.
Studies show that the water quality at designated dog beaches in California is equal to that of the surrounding beaches. Dog beaches spanning the coast of California serve as examples that, with the help of responsible dog owners and dedicated volunteers, a dog beach is a peaceful, non-intrusive, safe, fun place for people and their dogs to recreate.
We, the undersigned parties, who live, work, vote, and pay taxes in Los Angeles County, seek equality in the recreation venue. Our goal is to establish and maintain an off-leash dog beach on an underused one-mile section of Dockweiler State Beach. We see this beach as a community project, in partnership with Los Angeles County, designed to satisfy the needs of both dog owners and the general public.

Please familiarize yourself with the success of the off leash dog areas in East Bay Regional Parks District's (ebparks.org) Point Isabel- across the bay from San Francisco in Richmond,CA.It is a mixed use park that supports fishing,windsurfing,walking/jogging,a cafe and dogwash concession, picnicking, and wheelchair access in addition to off-leash activities for dogs. A dog owners group (pido.org)works to keep the park a clean, safe, enjoyable place for all users.
Although I don't live in the Los Angeles area, having access to an off-leash dog beach would certainly enhance the quality of my visits to friends and relatives in the area, and no doubt increase my patronage of local businesses.

As soon as the dog owners show a disrespect for the area by not picking up after their dogs , it should be closed. The City of LA has become increasingly hostile to dogs and dog owners. In our area (Playa del Rey, Westchester and Marina del Rey), we do not have an "official" dog park. We've lost 2 of our "unofficial" dog parks in the last two months and are in danger of losing the last "unofficial" place that we can take our dogs to. Every open green space has been developed and, of course, the beach is off limits to dogs. While dog owners contribute plenty to this city in terms of taxes, we get nothing back.

Dog owners, as a rule, are very responsible and recognize that we will share in clean up and control of our animals for the privilege of having an open space to romp our dogs. Generally speaking, the beach designated for the dog park will be better maintained than the human beach goers who leave their trash intentionally and irresponsibly.

There is really no where locally for him to go. I dont like the fact that I have to go into the next town over(El Segundo)to use there facility. tjats theirs. We are Westchester/playa del rey. We should have a proper place for our pets as well. as much as we pay for our homes in the 90045/90293 you would think there would be a place established for us to go. Look to Del Mar's dog beach as an example of how successfully (and simply) a dog beach can be run. The people making the trek to take their dogs to the beach are naturally responsible. Post some rules, put out a few trash cans...and we're good to go. It's embarassing how restricted our PUBLIC beaches are in Los Angeles and Orange County are. And it's all bred out a false sense of fear...such a shame and a waste of So Cal's best asset...it's beautiful coastline.

Please give us a place to play with our dogs. The main pollution of the beaches is by humans not dogs.
I wonder why people and their dogs are so disrespected by the officials. Dogs have been and are one of the most important socializing influences and helpers for humans for thousands of years and may have been an important factor in our evolution from brutes who relied on strength to become brutes who now rely on cunning and machines.
Oh well, so much for progress.

It's a disgrace that LA doesn't have off-leash beach spaces for dogs. San Diego's dog beaches are terrific places, as are those in the Bay Area, well-tended, clean, friendly, and visited by countless dogs and people. I went to PT. Isabel in the Bay Area with my dog and it's soooo great - aside from huge grassy areas, shoreline trails, beach for dogs to frolic in, and views of San Francisco and Marin, it also has public restrooms, a dog wash and supply/gift shop, and an outdoor cafe (coffees, soups, salads, sandwiches, etc.)! When I arrived there was a park worker onsite asking us to please fill out questionnaires asking us if there was anything that could make our visit more enjoyable. Sigh! If we built something similar, perhaps an onsite dog wash and/or cafe could help fund ongoing maintenance and clean-up of the beach?! No matter what, something must be done. Of all the big cities I've ever visited, LA is THE WORST when it comes to providing off-leash areas for our beloved canine companions.

There is 60 miles of beach in between areas that permit dogs (and one is on-leash). From North Malibu to Long Beach, there is NO beach area that allows dogs. This is unbelievable. Beaches much more pristine than LA's allow dogs. It's time for common sense to reach the law. I hope this happens.

Dogs should be able to run and play too. The dog owners would like to enjoy a day at the beach with their best friends. I find that so many places I want to go in CA don't allow pets, including parks. I pay my taxes and I'd like to enjoy the wilderness hiking with my dog.

Let's give one more reason to adopt a dog from the shelters in LA county - at capacity, kill shelters. You can take your dog with you to the local beaches, buy lunch there and enjoy instead of paying too high gas prices to drive 20 miles north to Malibu or south to Long Beach or Huntington. We deserve this and so do those we have taken in in order to save an innocent life. Help us thrive and keep helping the community.

Dockweiler would be a great place for a dog beach. It is not desireable for swimmers or sun bathers due to noise, smell, etc. and this would be great for dogs to be able to enjoy time at the beach with owners committed to making it a good experience for their dogs and other pet owners. It's long overdue in LA county. Pet owners would be willing to pay a fee too I'm sure.

I have 2 water loving labs and one of them has a bad knee which she required surgery for when she was 11 months old. Swimming is one of the only forms of exercise that she can do because there is much less strain on her knee. Running and walking are difficult for her and are creating arthritis. Allowing dogs to be on public beaches would allow us to be able to excercise her with low impact on her knee.

There is no where on the west side that is large enough to accomodate the needs of the many thousands of dogs in our area. We need this so badly for our dogs. There needs to be a closer "off leash" dog beach to residents of Los Angeles other than Huntington. For those environmentalists who are against this dog beach in Playa Del Rey, they need to look a the carbon foot print left by people who drive all the way down to Huntington to be able to have access to an off leash dog beach. Every other coastal California county has at least one dog beach. Most have more. The city of Los Angeles has hundreds of thousands of dogs - and not one dog beach! Nearby Long Beach has a fairly new off-leash beach, which is terrific. Unfortunately, it's surrounded by cones (no fencing), making it somewhat less relaxing to enjoy. It seems a very FEW politically connected people and/or politicians are blocking what should seem like an obvious move forward. Maybe efforts need to be focused on identifying those individuals, clearly understanding their considerations, and addressing them.
Dockweiler make more sense than any other LA County beach for a dog beach. It has the planes taking off over it from LAX, it has the Hyperion plan right over, it has the refinery right over it and the power plant right over it. This is not a real "people friendly" beach. It is a perfect off leash dog beach and we need to get approval. It is way past due.
Stephanie Harris, 90245
All the real considerations anyone has ever brought against an off leash dog beach has already been adequately addressed. It is time to approve this request and give the residents of LA county their own off leash dog beach so we no longer have to go to neighboring counties to enjoy the beach with out pets.
Nicole, 91767
I own a dog walking/pet sitting company out in the Inland Empire and I am looking for a good dog beach to bring my four legged clients to (besides Huntington Beach) for weekly outings, especially on hot inland summer days! For 10 years I have had to drive my golden retriever to either Long Beach or Huntington Beach, yet I live just one mile from a virtually unappreciated beach in El Segundo.
